What is a doula?
At Iowa City Birth Services, our doulas provide:
- non-medical, continuous, physical and emotional support during labor
- assistance in preparing a birth plan
- access to evidence based information, including a lending library
- relaxation and comfort measure to be used during pregnancy and birth
- help adjusting to the addition of a new family member
Why should I hire a doula?
Our doulas will help you by providing non-medical, physical and emotional support. Iowa City Birth Services’ doulas offer non-biased, evidence based care that focuses on the physical and emotional health of all involved in the pregnancy and birth relationship. We strive to help our clients create community connections both during pregnancy and beyond.
According to a study by Cochorane Collaborative, women who used a doula were more likely to have a spontaneous vaginal birth; were less likely to have an epidural or other pharmaceutical pain relief; were less likely to report dissatisfaction with their labors; had shorter labors; were more likely to give birth without cesarean, vacuum, or forceps; and were less likely to have babies with a low 5-minute Apgar score.
How is doula support different than support by my partner?
We are honored to be a part of your birth team and always strive to support the entire family during this exciting time. Our doulas make it possible for partners to take as active a role as they desire. We are trained professionals and have extensive knowledge and experience relating to pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period. This allows us to be a great resource of information and comfort to our clients.
